Gtalk does not come with any user option to stay idle. In many situations, you want to be online, but away as well. Now there is a freeware called gAlwaysIdle which enables you to set your status message as ‘idle’ with just single click.

Once you have installed the program, right click on Google Talk on the task bar and you’ll get three new options- Normal Idle, Always Idle and Never Idle. You can choose “”Normal Idle”, which lets GTalk decide when to set you as idle or “Always Idle”, which permanently sets your status as idle or “Never Idle”, which will prevent you from appearing as idle
